Shadow and Meditation I: The 'self'

Over the many centuries of meditative practice, individuals and communities have faced an aspect of personal reality that today we refer to as the ‘shadow’. This term comes from the Swiss psychotherapist, Carl G. Jung and is used to describe aspects of one’s psychological makeup that are unknown, shameful, or that one wants to keep hidden from others.

Q-Mind Sharing Circle

Q-Mind Sharing Circle

Deepening skills for communication, conflict resolution, mediation, resilience, self-awareness and emotional stamina.

Often as a LGBTQ person we can feel lonely in our “usual” environment. We suffer from being the minority, and might have learned to cope with that either by submission (think ourselves as less) or rebelling (get angry and fight) against others.

Mindfulness and NVC (Non Violent Communication) can help individuals to assert themselves in a healthy way, out of binary paradigm of submission / rebellion, by building their own self-awareness and resilience and expressing in a way that brings both assertiveness and connection.

Every third Wednesday BMC supports queer and queer friendly members of the community to join the circle of empathy and compassion to find resolve in personal and professional challenges.

This project is part of Q-Mind initiative in collaboration with Q-Space.

Fee: 30CNY or donations (proceeds go to Q-Space)

Introduction to Non Violent Communication

Non Violent Communication is an art of life that invites us to create and maintain authentic and deep relationships with ourselves and with others, through the channel of words, those we create in our head, those that go out from our mouth and those that come into our ears. It is a process that offers the possibility to slow down and change the focus of our daily conversations from “what is wrong” to “what is alive”.

Inner Work: Coaching Through Stress and Trauma

This 2-day program presents how to use BMC H.A.N.D.S. coaching model when clients experience strong emotions and touch on stress and trauma. If a client experiences a long term trauma and is on medication the coach is advised to work together with a therapist. However, in coaching, one or two sessions are enough to support the client in overcoming emotional obstacles related to the past so they can continue focusing on the actions needed to achieve their goals.

The Shadow and Meditation III: The 'Shadow'

There is much we are unaware of about ourselves and our self, and this appears to be a feature of human existence. There are experiences described as ‘enlightenment’ and while this is believed to be true by many, no one really knows that ‘ultimate enlightenment’ really is. We see evidence of darkness in enlightened beings, and sometimes these people wreak great pain on others. We see, in deeper dimensions of meditation, aspects of one’s self that are so very uncomfortable and hard to accept.

This final session in series The Shadow and Meditation will ruminate on this shadow from various ways, attempting to entice it to approach the light and consider ways this shadow is revealed to us. Be ready to share and honor what we all have in common: the shadow nature of our self.

Delivered by Dr Theo Cope

Theo A. Cope holds his MA and Ph.D. in Psychology and a B.A. in Gerontology. He is a certified Family Consultant and a Positive Psychotherapist (PPT), with certification granted by the World Association of Positive Psychotherapy in Wiesbaden, Germany. PPT is a trans-cultural therapeutic method, which began in 1968 by Dr. Nossrat Peseschkian.

The Shadow and Meditation II: The Inner Child

Inevitably, in periods of meditation, one confronts aspects of oneself related to memories of the past. Childhood leaves indelible imprints in our mind, structuring it, contributes to the physical sculpting of it through neurological development, and contributes to our unique experience of reality. Contemporary approaches in psychology as well as spiritual practices utilize a notion of an ‘inner child’: a psycho-spiritual image of the individual as a child, with the memories, joys, pains and sadness that one experienced. Though the past is temporally absent from the present, the traces and emotions from this past reverberate in the present and often deeply influences one’s future. Mindful practices can help develop an awareness of the past and one’s inner child, allow mental-emotional space for healing and nurturing of this aspect of the embodied self, and in imagination provide a connection with this past that is echoing in the present.

In this session, we will contemplate this inner child, create a space to open contact, and exchange experiences in order to glimpse how this dimension of our reality impact our shadow and self. As before, a meditation before and after will occur.

The Shadow and Meditation I: The Self

In this first gathering we will explore this idea of self and see if we can glimpse it’s elusive and illusive nature. It eludes us because it’s so hard to see our self; it is an illusion, defined simply as: “a thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived by the senses.” Some systems of thought go further and assert that self is an illusion and does not really exist. Self, as a word is used as a noun, pronoun, adjective and verb.
